Before you decide to nix carbohydrates from your diet, you may want to reconsider. While cutting out simple carbs may be beneficial, cutting out complex carbohydrates can have many adverse affects. So what’s the difference?
Simple Carbs: are digested quickly. Many simple carbohydrates contain refined sugars and few essential vitamins and minerals.
Complex Carbs: take longer to digest and are usually packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Carbohydrates are known to stimulate the production of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin controls the mood and if there is not enough produced, depression may results. People who abstain from including carbs in their daily diet are much more vulnerable to depression.
To avoid carbohydrate related depression five daily servings of complex carbohydrates should be consumed. Make sure to include brown rice, beans, vegetables, and whole-grains into your diet.
